The Richmond is a traditional shaker in-frame kitchen in every sense—from the solid Oak herringbone floor that the cabinets sit upon, to the plaster coving that surrounds the room—connected together by elegant hand-painted cabinetry.
The house, a new build, was treated by its owners to the finest craftsmanship throughout, using many traditional features such as sash windows, continuous handrails on stairs and a webbed fanlight front door.
So when the time came for the kitchen, the brief remained the same: traditional craftsmanship using authentic materials while integrating modern comforts.
The overmantle, while similar in shape to others, has a toned down detail which keeps it true to its tradition.
Using elegant curves and simple ogee mouldings, it remains a dominant centrepiece in this symmetrical design.
While the palette here is mostly soft, the island provides a deep contrast of colour to an otherwise serene room.
Fitted mostly with drawers for ease of use in this busy household, the island also serves as a communal space with a seated side where interaction is possible while meals are prepared.
It was a pleasure to work with Declan Sexton & Sons from start to finish when designing and fitting our kitchen. The quality of cabinetry and attention to detail meant it was a delight to go back to Sexton & Sons for other items for our home. With symmetry foremost in the designer’s mind, a set of solid oak bespoke dovetailed serving trays are centrally integrated under the window to break up this run of cabinetry—providing both function and form to this traditional design.
The upper glass cabinets, accent lit with warm-white LED ribbon lighting, provide a comforting twilight in the evening when the room is not in full use.
Finally, a double ceramic Belfast sink with an integrated weir completes the traditional theme of this authentic home.
